Bangladesh will seek emergency funds from the World Heritage Centre to restore the ecosystem and biodiversity of the Sundarbans mangrove forest, badly mauled by last month's killer cyclone, officials said on Wednesday.

Florida Democrat Bill Nelson, who chairs a subcommittee overseeing U.N. activities, wants to know why Florida's Everglades National Park was taken off a U.N. list of World Heritage sites considered "in danger." The Interior department says the removal of the Everglades from the list recognizes progress that's been made in it restoration. Environmental groups say the decision reflects not progress, but politics.

The UN Foundation today launched an emergency fundraising appeal for $100,000 to support the recovery effort for communities in and around the Sian Ka’an Biosphere reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The reserve’s infrastructure and delicate ecosystem were severely damaged by Hurricane Dean, a category 5 storm that devastated the area in August 2007. Paraiso de la Bonita, a Rivera Maya resort and member of the World Heritage Alliance for Sustainable Tourism, announced a $11,000 donation to the appeal to help reestablish businesses in dozens of communities in the area that earn their livelihoods through the sustainable cultivation of their natural environment.

Peru has 10 properties inscribed on the World Heritage List, including the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu, the Historic Centre of Lima, and the Chan Chan Archeological Zone. No reports of major damage to these sites have been received so far, but emergency financial assistance from the World Heritage Fund has been offered to the authorities concerned to assess and deal with the situation.

A group of experts from UNESCO and the World Conservation Union, IUCN, has been invited into the Democratic Republic of the Congo to investigate the slaughter of four mountain gorillas in Virunga National Park last month. They leave Paris Saturday on a 10 day mission to the central African country.

The death toll continues to rise in Virunga National Park (Democratic Republic of the Congo), where three females and one male silverback gorilla were shot and killed in the southern sector of the Park during the night of 22 July.

They heard the gunshots around 3 p.m., at least two pops that echoed across the green mountains of this vast park tangled up in vines, fallen trees and years of war. The park rangers knew immediately what it was, they said, and in their frayed uniforms and rubber boots, they began hacking their way with machetes into the jungle-like forest. This time, it was Rubiga. The rare mountain gorilla had been shot execution-style -- once in the back of the head and a second time in the hand. When the rangers found her hulking, lifeless body, her 2-month-old baby, barely alive, was still clinging to her chest.
